Children’s Dentistry in Cheltenham

The health of your child’s smile today can affect their oral wellness for decades to come. Our goal as your child’s dental provider is to facilitate healthy tooth development and good oral habits that will set their smile up for success.

When to Schedule Your Child’s First Visit

We highly recommend bringing your child in for a checkup as soon as possible, even if no teeth have erupted just yet. Routine, early evaluations make it possible to intercept issues before they evolve into major problems at a later age.

Your child’s first visit as an infant will usually involve a brief exam to screen for soft tissue concerns or things like tongue ties. Typically, they can just lie back in your lap to keep things comfortable. The last thing we want to do is make your child upset.

Ensuring a pleasant experience helps your child associate dental care with positive memories, rather than intimidating ones. And if they do require care, we can intercept issues while they’re smaller and more comfortable to correct.

Plan to schedule your child’s checkups every six months.

Services Offered

Checkups-We will perform a thorough dental exam on every child, ideally twice per year. During these evaluations, we’ll screen for issues such as eruption delays, tongue or lip ties, cavities, infections, airway obstruction, TMJ concerns and much more. Our goal is to equip parents with as much information as necessary to help their children enjoy a healthy smile by minimising unnecessary oral health risks.

Cleans-Six-monthly cleans help us reset your child’s smile. During their visit, we’ll show them age-appropriate ways to clean and care for their teeth each day, including modified brushing and flossing techniques. Plan to begin scheduling cleans as soon as your child is comfortable sitting still in the chair (usually by preschool).

Fluoride Treatment-Fluoride actively helps promote stronger, more cavity-resistant enamel. Just like your bones need calcium, teeth need fluoride. We recommend applying fluoride after cleans or additionally if your child is prone to tooth decay.

Fissure Sealants-Protective sealants help safeguard the most cavity-prone areas in your child’s mouth: the deep grooves and fissures of their back teeth. By sealing over these rough surfaces, it becomes easier to thoroughly clean their teeth with a toothbrush, minimising the chance of food particles contributing to decay.

Dental Fillings-Small cavities are best treated early before they spread deeper into the tooth. As long as your child is cooperative, we can complete their dental fillings here in our family practice. Otherwise, we can offer a referral to a nearby paediatric dentist.

We Accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

The CDBS covers up to $1,052 in dental benefits every two years for qualifying children. If your family receives Medicare benefits, CDBS can help cover things such as checkups, fillings, braces and more.
